Breast Reduction

Your Path to Improved Comfort and Well-Being

For many women, having oversized breasts is more than just an aesthetic concern. It often represents a daily physical burden, leading to back and neck pain, postural issues, or limitations in sports. Emotional well-being can also suffer due to the scrutiny of others or the difficulty in finding suitable clothing. If you long for more ease and a body image that truly fits you, a breast reduction may be the right step.

At SA Aesthetics in Berlin, Chief Physician Themistoklis Stavrakis, a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery, will guide you with empathy, years of experience in aesthetic breast surgery, and high medical expertise on this journey.

Our goal is for you to feel safe, understood, and thoroughly professionally cared for from the first consultation to the last follow-up examination.

What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, medically known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce breast size while improving breast shape and position. The goal is to create harmonious, natural-looking breasts that relieve the physical discomfort caused by excessive breast volume while achieving an aesthetically balanced result.

Why Patients Consider Breast Reduction

The decision for breast reduction is very personal. Many of our patients tell us during the consultation that they have felt restricted by the weight of their breasts since puberty or after pregnancies. The desire to move pain-free, engage in sports without limitations, or simply wear well-fitting clothing often takes precedence.

Difference Between Breast Reduction and Breast Lift

While a breast lift (mastopexy) only removes excess skin and reshapes the breast to restore its firmness, breast reduction additionally significantly reduces volume (i.e., glandular and fatty tissue). In practice, both procedures go hand in hand during a reduction: the breast is not only made smaller but also lifted and shaped into a more aesthetic, youthful form in the same surgical step.

When Is Breast Reduction Recommended?

How does breast reduction surgery work? Methods & Techniques

SA Aesthetics Berlin – Reduction mammoplasty

Modern reduction surgery includes various surgical techniques tailored to individual anatomical conditions, skin quality, and personal preferences.

01

Classic incision techniques (T-incision, vertical)

The vertical incision (Lejour method or i-incision): This technique is particularly useful for moderate reduction and tightening. The incision runs circularly around the areola and then vertically down to the breast fold. The T-incision (anchor method): For very large, heavy breasts where a lot of tissue and skin need to be removed, this method is the first choice. In addition to the vertical incision, another incision is made in the natural under-breast fold. This allows for optimal reshaping of the breast.
02

Scar patterns & incision designs explained

We understand that the thought of scars can be unsettling. The incisions are made as precisely and delicately as possible by our plastic surgeon. The incision in the breast fold is later well concealed by the natural skin fold or the bra. Over time and with proper scar care, the lines typically fade to inconspicuous, light marks.
03

Combination options

Every breast reduction surgery automatically includes a breast lift. Additionally, the nipple, which usually points downward in larger breasts, is carefully repositioned upward during the surgery so that it sits perfectly in the center of the newly shaped breast. Combining the procedure with liposuction, especially in the lateral breast area, is also possible for optimal results. To further refine the surgical scars after the healing phase, the procedure can be excellently combined in our Berlin practice with modern high-tech treatments such as fractional CO2 laser or the innovative radiofrequency microneedling (Morpheus8). These gentle procedures stimulate collagen production, making the scar tissue significantly flatter, lighter, and less noticeable.

Who is a suitable candidate for breast reduction?

Health requirements

For breast reduction surgery, you should be in good overall health. In our Berlin practice, we thoroughly review your medical history in advance to ensure the highest safety.

When is breast reduction surgery not advisable?

If breast growth is not yet fully completed (usually before the age of 18), the procedure should be postponed. We also advise against surgery in cases of acute untreated pre-existing conditions.

Impact of weight & lifestyle

It is beneficial if you have reached and maintained your personal comfortable weight before the surgery. Significant weight fluctuations after the procedure can alter the aesthetic result. Female smokers are advised to refrain from nicotine for several weeks before and after the surgery, as it can impair wound healing.

Healing & Recovery Phase

First Days After Breast Reduction

Immediately after the surgery, you will experience a slight feeling of tension and mild pain, which can be effectively managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. It is important to maintain strict physical rest in the first few days and preferably sleep on your back.

Wound Healing & Scar Formation

The stitches are usually self-dissolving, so there is no need for painful stitch removal. After about two weeks, the incisions are typically well closed at the surface, and targeted scar care can begin in consultation with our team.

Care & Behavior During Healing

When can you return to your normal daily routine?

  • Daily Life & Work: You can generally return to light office work and normal daily tasks after about 3 to 7 days.
  • Sports & Heavy Physical Work: Sports and heavy physical exertion should be avoided for about 2 weeks. Light physical activities are often possible again after about 2–3 weeks, depending on the healing progress. A special medical compression bra should be worn consistently for about 6 weeks to optimally support the breasts during the healing phase.

Results & Long-Term Effects

Even at the first glance in the mirror after the surgery, our patients often feel immense relief. The improvement in posture occurs almost immediately, as the heavy weight in the front is gone. The shoulders relax, and the back becomes straighter.

Risks and Possible Complications

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with breast reduction surgery, which we will transparently explain to you in advance. Fortunately, such side effects occur only rarely and are very manageable thanks to the highly professional care provided by our team.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

With the absence of weight in the front area, the upper body almost automatically straightens up. Chronic postural issues and rounded shoulders can be corrected in the long term, significantly alleviating neck and back pain.
It depends on the surgical technique used. With modern, gland-preserving methods, we try to preserve the milk ducts as much as possible.
Yes, this is very possible. During breast reduction, the surgeon can remove different amounts of tissue from each side to balance the breasts.
In general, it is recommended to wait until physical growth and breast development are fully completed (usually around the age of 18). In cases of extreme physical or emotional distress, surgery may be considered earlier on a case-by-case basis.
Yes. In this case, it is primarily referred to as a breast lift. The empty, excess skin is removed, and the breast is reshaped.
In the first weeks after surgery, a temporarily altered sensitivity of the nipples (e.g., numbness or increased sensitivity) is not unusual. In most cases, sensation normalizes over the course of healing over several weeks to months. Through precise, tissue-conserving surgical techniques and the experience of a specialized plastic and aesthetic surgeon, the risk of permanent sensitivity changes can be significantly minimized.
Yes. Tubular breasts (also known as constricted breasts) are a deformity where the glandular tissue grows in a specific direction. During surgery, not only can the size be adjusted, but the breast can also be completely reshaped to look natural.
A future pregnancy is completely safe from a health perspective. However, pregnancy hormones and weight gain can alter the aesthetic results of breast reduction.
Yes, this combination is often used. Particularly in the area of the outer breast (toward the armpits), gentle liposuction can help achieve an even more harmonious and beautiful overall result.
Most patients describe a completely new body sensation. The breasts feel lighter, move less while walking, no longer restrict during sports, and fit easily into standard bras and clothing.
