CO2 Acne Scar Treatment

Targeted Treatment for Acne Scars – for smoother, more even skin

Acne scars, uneven skin texture, or visible skin irregularities – many of these changes can now be targeted and sustainably treated. At SA Aesthetics in Berlin, we use modern fractional CO2 laser technology – an innovative method for improving skin texture, skin quality, and collagen regeneration.

What is the CO2 Laser?

CO2 Laser

A CO2 laser is a medical laser that emits concentrated light at a wavelength of 10,600 nm. This wavelength is ideal for targeted tissue ablation, where the top layers of skin are gently removed to stimulate collagen regeneration and skin renewal. Inside the device, carbon dioxide is used as the laser medium, hence the term "CO2."

What is the difference between fractional and traditional CO2 lasers?

While traditional CO2 lasers treat the entire skin surface and remove large areas, the fractional CO2 laser works with tiny, targeted micro-injuries. This leaves some skin between the treated areas intact, significantly speeding up healing and reducing risks. The result: effective skin renewal with shorter downtime and long-term collagen regeneration.

How does the fractional CO2 laser work on the skin?

The fractional CO2 laser creates tiny micro-columns in the skin, known as micro-ablation zones. These stimulate natural wound healing and especially the production of new collagen – a key substance for smooth, firm, and youthful-looking skin. Surrounded by untreated tissue, the treated skin areas heal particularly quickly.

Difference from non-ablative procedures

Non-ablative lasers only stimulate the skin to regenerate without removing the top layer. They are gentler but often less effective. Ablative procedures like the fractional CO2 laser specifically remove aged tissue, achieving significantly more visible results.

When is a CO₂ laser treatment advisable?

The fractional CO₂ laser is suitable for a variety of aesthetic skin concerns – especially when conventional creams, peels, or microneedling do not show sufficient results:

Treatment Areas

Which body areas are suitable for treatment?

The CO2 laser treatment is most commonly performed on the face – here, fine lines around the eyes and mouth, forehead wrinkles, or uneven skin textures can be particularly improved. The skin on the cheeks and jawline also visibly benefits from the smoothing and tightening due to stimulated collagen regeneration.

The neck and décolletage are also among the particularly sensitive yet heavily used skin areas. Here, the CO2 laser acts as a gentle method for skin rejuvenation without the need for surgical procedures.

For scar treatment, the fractional CO2 laser can be used on the entire body. Stretch marks (striae) can also be visibly improved in certain cases.

CO2 Laser Acne Scar Treatment – Smoother Skin & Refined Texture

Acne scars can change the skin structure long-term and often remain even after the acne itself has healed. Uneven surfaces, dents, or a restless skin appearance are common consequences – and can be specifically treated with modern laser technologies.

The CO2 laser offers a regenerative approach. Precise laser pulses stimulate the skin's natural renewal processes, promote collagen regeneration, and gradually refine the skin texture – for a more even and calmer skin appearance.

Since acne scars can vary greatly – in depth, shape, and distribution – an individualized treatment plan is crucial. In our practice clinic in Berlin, each treatment is carefully tailored to your skin type, scar structure, and personal goals. Often, a concept involving multiple sessions is sensible to gradually and gently improve the skin.

Procedure of CO2 laser treatment

01

Personal consultation

In the initial consultation, we analyze your skin, discuss your wishes, and jointly determine the appropriate treatment depth and intensity.
02

Preparation

Before treatment, intense sun exposure should be avoided for at least 2 to 4 weeks to minimize the risk of pigment shifts. Depending on skin type and treatment goals, targeted preparation with mild fruit acid products, antioxidant serums (e.g., with Vitamin C), or brightening agents like niacinamide may be beneficial to stabilize the skin and prepare it for laser therapy. For those prone to hyperpigmentation, a medically supervised depigmenting care may also be used. Irritating products like retinol peels should be avoided for 2–4 weeks, as well as alcohol-containing cosmetics for a few days before the appointment.
03

The laser treatment

The treatment itself usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and condition of the treated area. Before starting, a local anesthetic cream is applied to make the procedure as comfortable as possible; additional cooling measures may be used if necessary. If desired, we can also perform the treatment in our Berlin practice under twilight sedation. The laser is always precisely and individually adjusted to achieve an optimal balance between effectiveness and skin preservation.

CO2 Acne Scars – Frequently Asked Questions

For anyone struggling with uneven skin texture, dents, or an irregular skin appearance after acne has healed – and who wants to improve it specifically.
Atrophic scars such as boxcar and rolling scars respond particularly well to the CO2 laser. Ice-pick scars – the deep, pointed scars – are more challenging and often require a combined treatment approach. We will clarify what is realistically achievable for you in the consultation.
The modern eCO2 laser technology that we use in our practice allows for targeted treatment of acne scars and skin texture. Depending on the skin condition, scar structure, unevenness, and skin quality can be visibly improved, resulting in a more harmonious and refined overall appearance.
This largely depends on the type, depth of scars, and skin type. Generally, we recommend 2–4 sessions spaced several weeks apart to give the skin enough time to regenerate.
Initial improvements appear after healing. The full effect develops over 3–6 months – and often improves after each subsequent session.
