If the skin in the lower abdomen is sagging and hanging down, it is usually the result of significant weight loss or pregnancy. During a surgical mini tummy tuck, which tightens only the lower part of the abdomen up to the navel as opposed to a full tummy tuck, excess skin can be removed and a smooth, flat stomach can be shaped.
How does a mini tummy tuck work?
A mini tummy tuck is less extensive and therefore less time-consuming than a traditional tummy tuck. It takes about an hour and can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation. Unlike a full tummy tuck, a shorter incision is made that runs parallel to the pubic hairline in the lower abdomen. The skin of the abdomen is detached from the underlying tissue up to the navel, pulled down, and tightened. The rectus abdominis muscles in the lower abdomen can also be tightened during this step. Since the tightening only occurs in the lower abdomen, the navel does not need to be repositioned. Excess skin is removed, and the incision is closed with a special suturing technique. After the operation, a bandage is applied, and the mini tummy tuck is complete.
What does the aftercare look like after a mini tummy tuck?
A few hours after the procedure, the patient can leave the clinic. Physical rest is now recommended. In the weeks following the surgery, the patient must wear special compression garments to support the healing process and prevent the formation of dents and irregularities. Careful scar management should also be undertaken during the time after the mini tummy tuck. Due to the shorter incision, the scars from the mini tummy tuck are smaller than those from a full tummy tuck and can be easily concealed by underwear. After about one week, the patient is socially acceptable again, and full physical activity can be resumed approximately four weeks after the surgery.
