Neck Lift

Naturally defined contours through deep lifting

A tight, youthful-looking neck symbolizes vitality and self-confidence – but over time, the skin and underlying muscles lose elasticity. A neck lift offers an effective way to rejuvenate the neck area sustainably and visibly improve contours – particularly effective with the Deep Plane technique, as applied at Stavrakis Aesthetics in Berlin.

What is a Neck Lift?

Definition & Purpose of the Neck Lift

A neck lift (also known as a neck lift or neck lifting) is a surgical procedure to tighten sagging skin and reshape the neck contour. The goal is to sustainably correct age- or genetically related skin and tissue changes in the neck and chin area.

Common Indications

Typical reasons for a neck lift include:

  • Pronounced neck wrinkles
  • Double chin
  • Skin sagging due to aging or weight loss
  • Visible neck bands, known as platysma strands

Difference between Neck Lift and Facelift

While a facelift affects various areas directly on the face, the neck lift specifically targets the neck and chin area. Both procedures can be combined to achieve a particularly harmonious result.

Neck Lift Methods Explained

Medical Terms Explained for Neck Lifting

  • SMAS (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System): A fascial and muscular structure beneath the skin that is specifically lifted for stable and natural lifting results. In the neck, this refers to the platysma (see below).
  • Platysma: A flat neck muscle that can contribute to vertical wrinkles on the neck. It is tightened if necessary.
  • Platysmaplasty: A surgical procedure to tighten the platysma muscle, usually performed for visible neck bands.
  • Deep Plane Lift: An advanced technique that mobilizes and repositions deeper tissue layers. It is considered particularly natural and long-lasting.
  • Non-Surgical Neck Lift: Commonly used to refer to minimally invasive or device-based treatments. Medically, it is not a true neck lift.
  • Liposuction: Targeted fat removal in the chin and neck area. It is often used in conjunction with a neck lift to create harmonious contours.
  • Chin Tightening: A commonly used term for procedures in the chin and neck area, medically usually part of a neck lift or combined liposuction.

When is which procedure applied?

01

Platysmaplasty

Ideal for mild skin laxity and fine wrinkles, usually from the mid-40s onward.
02

Deep Plane Neck Lift

For significant laxity, excessive skin and tissue, and a desire for long-lasting contour improvement. Achieves the most profound and stable results.
03

Combination with Liposuction

Makes sense for fat deposits under the chin or double chin.
04

Combination of Deep Plane Neck Lift and Facelift

If tightening of the facial areas is also planned, the procedures can be combined to minimize the overall burden.

In the consultation at Stavrakis Aesthetics, we will determine together which method best suits your initial findings and desired outcome.

Who is a candidate for a neck lift?

A neck lift is suitable for women and men who are bothered by a visibly aged or disproportionately appearing neck area. Typical features include sagging skin, fat deposits under the chin (double chin), or pronounced vertical neck bands. These changes often occur from the age of 40, but can also appear earlier or later on an individual basis.

Defining Realistic Expectations

A neck lift can visibly rejuvenate the appearance: the neck looks tighter, more defined, and overall fresher. In particular, wrinkles, excess skin, and an unclear chin line can be effectively corrected. However, it is not possible to completely change individual skin structure or genetically determined features. Our goal is realistic, harmonious results that enhance your natural radiance and optimize your appearance.

When is a procedure not recommended?

Themistoklis Stavrakis, M.D. will discuss any risk factors with you during the pre-consultation and will communicate openly if anything stands in the way of the surgical decision.

01

Initial Consultation & Individual Analysis

In a detailed consultation, we clarify your goals, analyze the condition of your skin, and develop a treatment plan tailored to you. We place great importance on your individual needs and expectations. We carefully analyze your face and neck area, create before-and-after images, and discuss the results in a trusting environment.
02

Preparation

In preparation for the surgery, various examinations (e.g., blood analysis) may take place, we conduct a medical history, and discontinue certain medications, such as: Blood-thinning agents (e.g., aspirin, Marcumar) Anti-inflammatory pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen) Certain dietary supplements that affect blood clotting (e.g., ginkgo, omega-3 fatty acids) Your specific preparation plan will be developed in coordination with our team to ensure you start the treatment in the best possible way.
03

The Day of Surgery

The procedure is performed as an inpatient neck lift under general anesthesia, and in some cases, under twilight sedation. If the treatment is combined with a facelift, general anesthesia is usually advisable. For deeper surgical techniques like SMAS and Deep Plane lifting, the incision is placed behind the ear to access the lateral neck tissue and hide the later scar. The tissue is repositioned, tightened, and excess skin is removed.
04

Duration & Hospital Stay

The surgery lasts 2-3 hours. Typically, you will spend one night in our clinic in Berlin for observation afterward.

Healing & Recovery Phase

Recovery Time Week by Week

Week 1: You will notice minimal swelling and a slight feeling of tension in the skin. Mild pain can be well controlled with pain medication. It is important to rest thoroughly now, and strenuous physical activities should be avoided.

Weeks 2-3: The swelling decreases, and light activities become possible again. After 10-14 days, many patients are socially acceptable.

From Week 4: The final result becomes increasingly visible, and daily life can generally return to normal. Sports and physical exertion should be avoided for 3-4 weeks. The scars are placed discreetly and usually fade very well.

General Care Instructions After Surgery

Avoid direct sunlight, nicotine, and alcohol during the healing phase, as these can delay wound healing and increase the risk of complications. Keep your head elevated as much as possible in the first few days and gently cool the treated areas regularly. The use of special medical care creams supports skin regeneration and helps reduce swelling and redness more quickly.

Results & Longevity

When will the final result be visible?

A large part of the results is visible after 4 weeks. The final result usually appears after about 3 months.

How long does a neck lift last?

In particular, the Deep Plane techniques allow for particularly stable, long-lasting results due to the deep tissue repositioning. These results can last up to 15 years.

Factors that Influence the Result

Genetics, lifestyle, and care routines affect longevity. Excessive sun exposure can accelerate skin aging and impair results – consistent UV protection is therefore important. Our team is happy to advise you on suitable accompanying care and maintenance strategies.
