Tummy Tuck
After significant weight loss or pregnancy, the skin on the abdomen can become loose and saggy. The presence of a so-called pannus is also possible. When targeted exercise and diets do not yield further results, a tummy tuck – also known as abdominoplasty – can smooth, tighten, and flatten the abdomen.
How does a tummy tuck work?
A tummy tuck requires inpatient treatment and is performed under general anesthesia. At the beginning of the procedure, the planned incision line is marked on the patient's abdomen. The tummy tuck requires an incision that runs just above the pubic hairline from hip bone to hip bone, as well as a circular incision around the navel. Once the incisions are made, the abdominal wall can be detached from the underlying tissue up to the ribs. The rectus abdominal muscles are tightened, and special suturing techniques are used to reshape the abdominal wall. Typically, a tummy tuck is combined with liposuction in specific areas. The skin of the abdomen is then pulled down to create a smooth and tight appearance. Since the navel should remain in the same position, a small opening must be cut into the new location of the abdominal wall for it. Excess skin and fat tissue in the lower abdomen are removed, drainage tubes are placed, and all incisions are closed with a special suturing technique in multiple layers. Finally, a compression bandage is applied.
What should be considered after a tummy tuck?
After the tummy tuck, a hospital stay of 1 to 2 days is recommended. The drainage tubes are usually removed the day after the surgery. In the weeks following the procedure, the abdomen should be rested as much as possible, and physical activities should be gradually resumed. We will provide you with intensive advice on this matter. A special abdominal binder that supports healing should be worn for 4-6 weeks. To prevent excessive scarring, we recommend diligent scar care. Since the scars are located in the lower abdominal area, they can be well concealed by underwear.
